Buried deep within the Western Egyptian Desert, approximately 150 km southwest of Cairo, lies one of the globe's most incredible and surreal landscapes: Wadi Al Hitan, or Whale Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stunning national park is more than an eye-candy show of sand and rock—it is a prehistoric graveyard that holds Earth's evolutionary history secrets.
Wadi Al Hitan is the only site on our planet where one can find fossils of prehistoric whales (Archaeoceti), including skeletons, in such quantity and quality. It is a spot that one cannot possibly miss for adventure travelers, scientists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.
Wadi Al Hitan, or "Valley of the Whales," is located in the Wadi El-Rayan Protected Area of the Fayoum Oasis. It's unusual in that it has so many and so well-preserved marine fossils over 40 million years old, when the desert was a shallow tropical sea.
It was there that researchers uncovered fossilized remains of Basilosaurus and Dorudon—the vestigial-hind-legged ancient whales—that bridged the gap in evolution between sea creatures and terrestrial mammals. These finds made the site internationally significant to the study of evolution and paleontology.
Visit the Fossil Display Trail
Follow the interpretive fossil trail into the desert where tourists can see real, in-situ whale skeletons, fossilized mangroves, and even ancient shark teeth. The trail is clearly signposted and full of informative signage.
Drive the Desert Scenery
Gasp at wind-sculpted rock formations, cliff tops, and sand dunes stretching as far as the eye can see. The scenery is surreal—perfect for photography buffs and privacy hunters.

Wadi Al Hitan is about 2–3 hours' drive from Cairo, Fayoum Governorate. It is best to visit via an organized eco-tour or 4WD as it is remote and off-grid.
Recommended Route:
Cairo → Fayoum → Wadi El Rayan → Wadi Al Hitan
Tours often have the option of stopping at Wadi El Rayan Waterfalls, Magic Lake, and Qarun Lake for a day or overnight desert trip.
The best time to visit is October to April when the weather is a bit cooler. Avoid going in the summer, as it gets extremely hot in the desert, with temperatures reaching more than 40°C (104°F).
Most tourists visit Nile Valley or Red Sea, but Wadi Al Hitan alone has something uniquely its own: an undisturbed wilderness that tells of the ancient history of Earth. Unlike the Pyramids or temples, this is a site that existed before man, and it defies everything that we have learned about life on Earth.
Whether you’re an adventurous traveler, a science enthusiast, or someone who simply wants to escape the city and reconnect with nature, Wadi Al Hitan delivers a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
No electricity or mobile signal in the area—charge all devices beforehand.
Bring your own water, food, and camping gear if staying overnight.
Respect the environment—no fossil collecting or disturbing protected areas.
Bring wide-angle lenses and a drone if possible—the aerial views are spectacular.
