The City of El Kab is one of Egypt's most spectacular but lesser-known archaeological treasures, located on the east bank of the Nile between Luxor and Aswan. The city, which was once known as Nekheb, was the ancient capital of Upper Egypt in the Early Dynastic Period. El Kab went on to remain a powerful political and religious center for hundreds of years. It was dedicated to the vulture goddess Nekhbet, the protective goddess of Upper Egypt. The town played an important role in the unification of Egypt and remained an important town throughout the Pharaonic era.
The city is surrounded by massive mudbrick walls that once protected its religious temples and residential quarters. The largest temple at El Kab is the temple of Nekhbet, which has some old inscriptions and hieroglyphs depicting royal ceremonies and religious rituals. Due to its strategic location, El Kab was also a trade and military center. Merchants and caravans passed through the area, bringing goods from Nubia and the Red Sea to the Nile Valley. El Kab was therefore a bustling economic hub in its prime.
