DAY 5 – Mount Nebo, Madaba and Dead Sea Leisure Time

The 5th day of your Cairo to Petra holiday begins with another fabulous hotel breakfast, and then you will be heading out for another wonderful day of sightseeing.

First, you will be taken visit Mount Nebo and an old monastery. Mount Nebo is of course the place where Moses first cast his gaze upon the Promised Land before he died, and many people believe that he was later buried on Mount Nebo as well.

For many visitors, the highlight of this visit is the incredible view you get when you reach the old monastery. From this vantage point, you get a splendid view of the Jordan Valley; the Dead Sea, and even parts of the Holy Land far in the distance.

After spending some time on Mt. Nebo, you will then be taken to Madaba, the city of mosaics, where you will enjoy a visit to the magnificent Greek Orthodox Basilica of St. George.

This truly amazing church still functions as one of Jordan’s main places of Christian worship, but it is most famous for its ancient 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land. This remarkably accurate mosaic map consists of more than 2 million vividly colored stones, all of which were sourced locally.

From the church, you will make your way to the Dead Sea. Despite its name, the Dead Sea is in fact a vast lake, rather than an ocean. The immediate area surrounding the Dead Sea is approximately 400 meters below sea level, making it the lowest place on earth.

The Dead Sea is of course most famous for its incredibly mineral-rich mud and its incredibly salty water which makes it easy for people to float effortlessly on the water. The mud and sediment is rich in minerals which are today found in many luxury skin care products.

Enjoy some time floating on the water and enjoying the mud, and then as evening times begins approaching, you will be driven back to your luxury hotel in Amman.

DAY 6 – Day Tour of Petra, the Lost City

As usual, today will start with a fabulous breakfast being served at your hotel, and then shortly after you have finished eating, you will be picked up, and you will be taken to see Jordan’s premier sightseeing attraction, the ancient city of Petra.

Petra tours typically involve a lot of walking, so it is highly recommended that you eat a good breakfast beforehand and also that you wear a comfortable pair of shoes.

Also known as the Rose Red City of Petra, this indescribable site never fails to astonish and amaze, no matter how many times you visit. Just picture an 80 to 200-meter deep gorge running more than 1000 meters through desert rock, with an entire city carved into the sides of the gorge.

From the visitor center, it is about 700-meters to the Siq entrance but you will be covering this distance on a horse, and it is from the Siq entrance that the magic of your tour begins in earnest. The Ancient Nabatean Arabs carved hundreds of places into the rock faces, including tombs; bath houses; storerooms; vaults, burial chambers, and the site’s most impressive structure of all, the Treasury.

There is no way anyone would be able to see everything at this site in a single day, but you can be sure that your tour will see you visiting all of the best features. You will also enjoy a wonderful ride on horseback while you are there, which in itself is a wonderful experience, given the spectacular setting.

With so much sightseeing and so much walking behind you, you will be taken back to your hotel where you can enjoy a well-deserved rest and a good night’s sleep on the last night of your Cairo to Petra tour.
