About Cairo

Cairo is simply the largest city in Africa and the Arab world. It is also one of the most interesting cities to explore all over the globe. The History and Establishment of Cairo

The very establishment ever founded in Cairo was the ancient town of Iunu, founded during the reign of the Old Kingdom, which was a sacred city mentioned in many ancient Egyptian historical records. Ruins of this ancient town is now located in Eastern Cairo.

When the Romans conquered Egypt, they built the famous Babylon Fortress in the 2nd century AD. Afterwards, Roman Emperor Arcadius reconstructed the fortress in the 4th century AD. In fact, the fortress is still situated in Coptic Cairo today.

However, it was the Fatimids who established Cairo, or Al Qahera, that we know today. When the Fatimids, with their Sultan Al Moez Le Din Allah, and their army commander, Gawhar El Siqly, took control of Egypt established Cairo in 969 AD. 100 years afterwards, Badr Al Gamaly, the new Fatimid army commander, constructed the famous fortified walls and gates of Cairo.

With several dynasties, sultans, and kings, Cairo remained as the capital of Egypt decades afterwards.


The Location of Cairo

Cairo is located at the end of the River Valley just before the Nile Delta. This strategic location enabled Cairo to plays its role perfectly. The term Greater Cairo is actually a combination of three governorates Cairo, Giza, and Qalyubia.

Cairo is located around 230 kilometers to the South West of Alexandria, 713 kilometers to the North of Luxor, 875 kilometers to the North of Aswan, and 453 kilometers to the North East of Hurghada.
