The History and Establishment of the Colossi of Memnon

The Colossi of Memnon are the only remaining sections of the huge and impressive mortuary temple of Amenhotep III who ruled Egypt during the reign of the 18th dynasty.

The two statues were constructed out of quartz stones that were transferred around 670 kilometers from Northern Cairo to their current location. The statues have a height of 18 meters and weigh more than 720 tons.

The Romans called the statues Memnon, the ancient Greek hero. When a voice of weeping started from one of the statues, the legend said that this is the mother of Memnon crying after the death of her son.
